Real Madrid vs Getafe: history and memorable league meetings

A local league encounter with more variety than its reputation suggests: narrow wins, surprises and high-scoring meetings.

Real Madrid against Getafe brings two clubs from the Madrid region together, but geographical proximity does not make every meeting alike. Some matches have been open and high-scoring; others have turned on one moment after long spells of resistance. That variety is a better introduction to the fixture than assuming the favourite will always have an easy afternoon.

A history with room for surprises

Real Madrid’s historical home-match dossier records a 2–0 win in the 2004–05 league season and a 0–1 defeat in 2007–08. Set side by side, those results explain why the opponent deserves attention on its own terms. A familiar stadium and a more celebrated squad do not remove the uncertainty of a single match.

There are player connections as well as results. Madrid’s dossier lists Raúl Albiol, Esteban Granero and Roberto Soldado among those who represented both clubs. For supporters, these names offer a different route into the fixture: the visiting shirt can contain familiar careers, while a former player’s role may look different with new teammates. The link is footballing as well as geographical.

Different matches, different demands

In 2015–16, Madrid won the home league meeting 4–1. The away game on 16 April 2016 finished Getafe 1–5 Real Madrid, as confirmed by LaLiga’s official report. They were separate matches at different venues, a distinction that matters when revisiting this season.

On 13 May 2023, Asensio’s shot from the edge of the area in the 70th minute earned Madrid a 1–0 Bernabéu win. The match came four days before the away leg of the Champions League semi-final against Manchester City. It places the result in a busy week, with a domestic league fixture between European commitments and little time separating the competitions.

Five Madrid scorers in Getafe

The April 2016 away victory had five different Madrid scorers: Karim Benzema, Isco, Gareth Bale, James Rodríguez and Cristiano Ronaldo. Pablo Sarabia scored for Getafe. LaLiga’s report describes James supplying Benzema’s opener and Benzema combining with Isco for the second. The different scorers and their combinations give the 1–5 its character: several players contributed the passes and finishes that built the result.
